TOP STORY:
Rich countries languish at bottom of class on education funding

Leaders of the world’s 22 richest countries have been ranked from A to F in a new school report released today on the quantity and quality of aid they provide for primary education in poor countries. While Norway and the Netherlands come top of the class, the US, Greece and New Zealand languish at the bottom.

The Global Campaign for Education report (GCE) is the first analysis of a promise made by rich country leaders three years ago, to provide the aid needed for every child to go to school. It comes ahead of a critical donor meeting in Oslo, Norway on 20th and 21st November.

The US was not the only G8 country to put in a poor performance, with the UK scraping a 13th placed D, Japan getting a D in 15th position, Germany also gaining a D and Italy earning a dismal E in 18th place.

“Leaders of some of the richest countries including the US and Italy have flunked the exam on education aid,” said Oxfam’s senior policy advisor Oliver Buston. “Six months on from the G8 summit, donors must seize the chance at this week’s critical meeting in Oslo and provide hard currency to meet education funding promises.”

It would take an additional $5.6 billion in aid to ensure that every child could go to school, which is the equivalent of just three days global military spending. Currently, rich countries provide only $1.4billion annually.

Right now over 100 million children around the world get no access to education and another 150 million will not complete their primary education.

"The $5.6 billion extra needed to educate all children is one-fifth the amount Americans spend on pizza each year, and half what Europeans spend on ice cream," said Oxfam's Buston.

The GCE is calling upon the G8 and other donors to make a firm commitment in Oslo to reach the $5.6 billion funding figure. Donors must also provide immediate financing for Honduras and the other eleven countries that have developed credible basic education plans within the Fast Track Initiative. Fast Track is a path-breaking agreement between rich and developing countries in which developing countries that demonstrate strong commitment to educating all their children receive major increases in aid.

Honduras is a clear example of the failure of rich countries to live up to their promises. The Honduran government devised a plan to improve the quality of education, and due to the devastating collapse of the international coffee market, needs more help than ever to achieve these basic goals. However donors slashed the $78 million they had promised to Honduras under Fast Track to just $37 million. The US government has committed a meager two million dollars.

...and the
UK has not coughed up a cent for Honduras.

MOVIES - Latest at cinema & on dvd

Starsky & Hutch (DVD zone 1)

If you ask your father he'll probably be able to tell you that Starsky & Hutch was something of a phenomenon on television, back in the late 70s and early 80s. But why bother this movie (based on that tv-show, your father probably know all about) stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as the two detectives.

First of all the movie has captured that 70s feel remarkably well down to the last detail from music, fashion, though I miss a little bit of the feel in the way it's shot – but it's still a brilliant.

The plot might be a bit dupion's, but then again what you expect – this is all about laughs and groove. Ben is an overachieving by the book serve the good cause cop (at first glance), while Owens serves himself. Now they get assigned as partners because they deserve each other. And has to tangle with a nasty latin drug dealer with a little help from the kingpin Huggy Bear played by boss-pimp Snoop Dogg.

Though both Ben and Owen are great by themselves and almost on their best toughener, Snoop steals the show. To put it short your in for a real hilarious laugh out loud movie and probably the best comedy this year.

The Extras: Your not really in for a treat when it comes to features on the DVD. You get the movie and a the usual gag reel, deleted scenes and a pretty cool fashion show with Snoop and that's about it, there's not even a sleeve inside the cover. Verdict 7/10 (extras gets a yawn).

Rating: PG-13 (partial nudity, drug content, language and some violence)

Get Starsky & Hutch

previous reviews:

Agent Cody Banks

What do you get when you put to of the hottest up and rising boys and girls in hollywood in a plot with lot of humor and cool gadgets? You get the funniest and coolest spy movie to come out this year!! and that is agent Cody Banks! That's what we said about Cody Banks 1, unfortunaly the sequal was everything, but great and it should have been left to Harald Schwartz to direct as well. That's really all we have to say about Cody Banks 2, it's not worh vasting space for a review. If you don't have number 1 on dvd get it and forget about the sequal. You much better of with the Spy Kids series.

Underworld (dvd)

So now Vampires are hunting Werewolf’s? That’s in itself is an interesting twist on things, but more so it might irritate some die hard mythology fans – if you don’t mind that your in for a fast paced action with many elements from drama and film noir movies.

Already in the opening sequence it had my attention as its production design introduce a clever stylistic use of shades of blue, this gives the movie a little bit of noir feel, and a lot or artistic alibi, add the nice narrative voice over from the main character and you have me convinced I am in for more then just a traditional action flick.

WThe lead character is nicely portrayed by Kate Beckingsale whose face alone gives you a weird feeling of fascination. So, it’s vampires killing werewolves but it’s really about segregation and hate (hint: the alibi that it’s more then an action movie, it actually has something to say).

Though mostly the movie delivers I can at times not help the feeling that they somewhat shamelessly stolen a few bits and pieces from Blade, shame really because I don’t think it be hard to come up with a little bit of originality for themselves. After all you already have an interesting plot.

Conclusion; all in all it’s a very entertaining movie, though at times it feels a bit like you seen it before, but what it lacks in originality it makes up in style and “feel”, absolutely worth having in your collection in between matrix and blade. Verdict 7/10

MUSIC - Latest music out on cd

Britney Still In The Zone

The most talked about 21 year old girl in the world is back in the zone simply because as she put it herself she can’t stand not working – so much for the break she where supposed to have and what a funky and sweat dripping album those club surfing she’s been doing resulted inn.

First of all I never liked Britney’s music and I really didn't’t understand why she became as popular as she did, I mean come on it couldn’t be all because of a school uniform. Anyway, this review is about Britney Spears new album In The Zone and not about gossip, break up, topless and bottomless covers of Rolling Stone and Esquire.

The album is pumping hot just like her prior album single Slave gave promises about, now she takes it all the way – a more mature sound, tough the vocal is still very Britney. Her selection of producers is interesting: Moby, RedZone, Ying Yang Twins, and R. Kelly represent much of the album; one can also sense Madonna’s presence on more then the annoying track she is featured on.

It’s above all a club-album, with a refreshing sound so damn pulsating and the repetitive chorus sticks to your mind (just like it before). It’s more contrast on this album from the funky Showdown to the naked Shadow and especially Every time who only are ruined by an annoying and standard chorus to the 80s inspired brave new girl.

All in all the album really is from a brave and almost new girl, I hope it sell enough so she can experiment more on the next album. Verdict 6/10

Highlights: Toxic, Brave New Girl, Early mornin’
Producers:
Moby, Ying Yang Twins, and RedZone

GAMES - hot on console and pc

Prince of Persia – sands of time

It’s reason to concern when my big brother in his mid twenties (okay, 24) comes home excited as the childish boys in my class with a small bag in his hand almost jumping up and down and yells I’m going to borrow you playstation for awhile. Huh? As he inserted the disk he mumbles something about this being a follow up of his childhood favorite game of all time, but more then a follow up it’s a rebirth of dimension a super fantastic games better then Jak and Daxter and Grand Theft Auto. Oh, well what is a girl to do? I sat down to see what this fantastic thing was.

Surprise to surprise an animation worthy of the best of Disney greets us as the game start, but it’s not video it’s the game. WOW. Needless to say when he left to visit his girlfriend later I grabbed the console and started playing – what strikes you first is the fantastic animation as I mentioned, and the easy control. I like the storytelling way of the game, just like a fairytale like 1001 night it puts you in a magical land.

It’s sort of puzzle game and there’s some fighting. All done in a smooth way and I understand why he was excited. You don’t need to be a fan of the old game to play this, it stands well on is own to feet and you can’t help but being captivated by the prince trying to save the princess in this tale.

If you liked Ico, Jak and Daxter, and Tomb Raider 4, then you probably love this game, and the last word it is probably regardless of your taste in game one of the best titles that has been released on Playstation 2 this year – the only negative thing is that it might be a bit short for a driven gamer (not me I deny it).
